So You Want to Study the Bible?

Taught by Rabbi Jeremy Rosen

Offered on Wednesdays Starting October 6th (LA 7.00 am NY 10.00 am UK 3.00 pm SA 4.00 pm Israel 5.00 pm)

On Wednesday, 6th October, Rabbi Jeremy Rosen will be teaching a new weekly course on the Bible. If you are interested in attending these lectures, Rabbi Rosen strongly recommends a copy of the Bible, as specified below.

You will need an English translation of what is called The Old Testament. The Tanakh in Hebrew. Which includes three components. The Torah (the Five Books of Moses or Chumash), The Prophets, and The Writings. This year we will be focusing on Genesis. No knowledge of Hebrew is required. You will not need a Hebrew version. But if you do, I recommend a series of options that give both Hebrew and English.

If you want an online text:

  • www.sefaria.com Under the heading TANAKH you will find the whole of the Bible. We will start at the beginning! Sefaria is free.

If you want a written text:

  • The JPS Jewish Publication Society. Hebrew and English Tanakh

  • Art Scroll Chumash all of which have Hebrew and English alongside each other.

  • The Koren Chumash

If you are interested in a text and a serious commentary:

  • The Soncino Books of the Bible Each volume contains the Hebrew and English texts of the Bible in parallel columns, with a commentary below. A bit dated but handy.

  • The Living Torah, by Aryeh Kaplan In addition to the text, it has footnotes, explanations, and a detailed index, cross-references, footnotes, maps, and diagrams.

  • The Chumash: The Stone Edition The best-selling English-Hebrew Torah translation and commentary in English-speaking countries. Text of the Torah in English and Hebrew plus the great commentator Rashi, as well as helpful illustrations and diagrams. But its outlook is very traditional.

  • The Jewish Study Bible, from Oxford University Press, edited by Adele Berlin and Marc Zvi Brettler The English text is the New JPS version. With an updated commentary and modern-day academic textual criticism.

If you are interested in how Modern Orthodoxy adapts its approach:

  • To This Very Day Fundamental Questions in Bible Study. Amnon Bazak. Maggid.

  • The Philosophy of Hebrew Scripture Yoram Hazony. Cambridge.

  • Genesis From Creation to Covenant Zvi Grumet. Maggid.
