Zionism Is Not a Threat — It Is the Foundation

It was during his speech at the Knesset that President Donald Trump uttered the extraordinary words (Transcript):
“...the people of Israel have never given up from the threats of Zionism, from all sorts of threats...” — President Donald Trump
Trump's statement, in context, was (speaking about G-D): "And He still writes hope into the hearts of His children all over the world. And that is why even after 3000 years of pain and conflict, the people of Israel have never given up from the threats of Zionism, from all sorts of threats you want, you want the promise of Zion, you want the promise of success and hope and love and God."
Extraordinary — and deeply troubling. That a foreign leader, standing in the very heart of Jewish sovereignty, would characterise Zionism as a threat, is almost beyond belief. Zionism is not a threat to Israel. Zionism is Israel. It was Zionism that gave birth to the modern State of Israel seventy-seven years ago. It was Zionism that gathered our scattered people from the ashes of the Shoah and gave us a homeland. It was Zionism that took the encouragement of the western world and turned it into reality, building a vibrant, modern Jewish state.
In the years immediately following the Shoah, the western world actively encouraged Jews to return to their ancestral homeland and establish a state where we could live safely as Jews.
But, as history teaches us, the West gives with one hand and slowly takes with the other.
First, there is support. Then there are qualifications. Then comes erosion. What was first promised becomes something we are told we should be “grateful” to have received. And finally — where we find ourselves today — the claim that it was never promised at all.
Against that backdrop, Trump’s choice of words is astonishing. My reaction on X captured this sentiment succinctly:
“It’s interesting that President Trump called out the Zionists in his Knesset speech — many in his own country feel the same way about MAGA.”— רם בן זאב
It is nothing short of extraordinary for a man whose entire political identity is built upon fervent nationalism to come to Israel and imply that Jewish nationalism — Zionism — poses some sort of threat. Nationalism in Israel is no less legitimate than nationalism in America. In fact, Jewish nationalism predates American nationalism by millennia.
Zionism does not threaten Israel; Zionism is the beating heart of Israel. It is the force that built the state, defended it, and continues to sustain it. To describe it as a threat is not a slip of the tongue — it is a statement that strikes at the core of Jewish self-determination.
Words spoken in the Knesset, especially by someone who claims to be a friend of Israel, carry weight. These words were not vague, and they were not lost in translation. They were clear, deliberate, and extraordinary — and they demand a clear, unapologetic response.
Zionism is not the threat. Zionism is the answer.
