How Long Has Donald Trump Been a Fed—Sorry, an Informant?

The recent remark by Speaker Mike Johnson that President Donald Trump served as an FBI informant in connection with Jeffrey Epstein has sparked a wave of questions, not least among Trump’s most loyal supporters. The claim is striking not because the idea of Trump cooperating with the FBI is entirely new—it isn’t—but because it has never before been spoken aloud by such a senior official.
Speculation about Trump’s relationship with the FBI stretches back decades. In New York of the 1980s, skyscraper construction meant navigating mob-controlled labour and unions. In Atlantic City, the casino industry was likewise entwined with organised crime. Journalists and biographers have often noted that Trump seemed to avoid the kind of entanglements with law enforcement that ensnared many of his peers. This led to speculation—never confirmed—that he may have provided information to federal authorities when it suited him. Whether such a relationship was formal, involving signed agreements and documented informant status, or whether it was the looser category of “cooperating witness” or even simply a “concerned citizen,” remains unclear.

What is clear is that Johnson’s phrasing thrusts this long-standing rumour into the present moment. The reaction among Trump’s base may prove decisive. For years, Trump’s supporters have rallied around his battle against what they view as a politicised, weaponised FBI. The agency is, for many in that movement, synonymous with federal overreach and corruption. To hear that the man they believe to be the chief target of the “deep state” was in fact cooperating with the very same bureau will strike some as dissonant—if not a betrayal.
The political risk is not so much in the fact of informant activity itself, but in perception.
Among a base where the phrase “Fed, Fed, Fed” is shorthand for distrust and infiltration, the suggestion that Trump himself was an informant could become a difficult narrative to overcome. Supporters who have stood by him through two impeachments, multiple indictments, and an assassination attempt may find themselves, for the first time, pausing at the thought that the man who embodies their resistance has for years been working, officially or unofficially, with the FBI.

The answers to how long Trump has been cooperating, and on what terms, remain unknown. What is certain is that the mere possibility will test the loyalty of a base that has built its identity on opposition to the federal institutions now said to have been receiving Trump’s help.
