Hebrew Synagogue Strengthens Community Protection Through Shomrim Scotland

In the wake of the terrorist attack at a synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester, yesterday, Hebrew Synagogue is urging Scotland’s Jewish community to remain vigilant and informed.

Through its security initiative, Shomrim Scotland, Hebrew Synagogue focuses on the protection and safeguarding of the Jewish community across Scotland.

Shomrim Scotland operates under Hebrew Synagogue and works to strengthen communal security through education, the implementation of best-practice security procedures at synagogues and community properties, and through active engagement with members of the Jewish community.

“Our response must be proactive, not reactive,” said Bill White, Executive Director of Hebrew Synagogue. “While we grieve for those affected by the attack in Manchester, we must also ensure that our communities are prepared, vigilant, and supported.”

Shomrim Scotland is staffed by volunteers who are committed to protecting Jewish life. The organisation focuses on three core areas: education, helping raise awareness and understanding of security measures; watch and report, providing a visible community presence and identifying potential risks; and incident response, remaining alert and prepared to act swiftly in the event of any threat or, G-D forbid, an attack.

Participation is open to members of the Jewish community across Scotland. All Shomrim Scotland services are provided free of charge, reflecting the shared responsibility of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the community.
