The Indian pharmaceutical industry stands as a powerhouse, ranking third globally by volume and eleventh by value.

As highlighted in the Economic Survey 2025-26, the sector achieved an impressive annual turnover of 4.72 lakh crore rupees in the financial year 2025. With exports growing at a robust 7% annually over the past decade, the industry's momentum is undeniable.

India is the undisputed leader in the generic medicines market, supplying 20% of global demand. With the capability to manufacture around 60,000 generic brands across 60 therapeutic categories, the country plays a crucial role in global healthcare.

Remarkably, India is at the forefront of producing Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DPT), Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), and measles vaccines. Moreover, Indian manufacturers supply an astonishing 60% of UNICEF’s vaccine needs and 90% of the World Health Organization’s demand for measles vaccines. They also meet 40-70% of the global requirements for DPT and BCG vaccines.

Through its commitment to making essential medicines and vaccines accessible, the Indian pharmaceutical industry has not only distinguished itself but also underscored its importance on the global stage. This positions India as one of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced pharmaceutical producers, ready to meet the healthcare challenges of the future.
